This poster was presented at the 50th Philippine Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PSBMB) Annual Conference. We reviewed metabolomics studies from published works in the Philippines and abroad, and employed exploratory analysis to determine research trends, themes and analytical platforms. The goal of this webinar was mainly to educate the students of the Davao Medical School Foundation, Inc. of the various statistical tests, methods, terminologies, and other statistics-related topics applicable to the medical field. I’ve talked on research designs, internal consistency, sample size calculation, inferential statistics, assumption testing, and common statistical software including those that requires coding (R and Python) and no-coding, and a demonstration of how statistical analysis is done in jamovi. Definitions of terms, data types, types of hypotheses, p-value, confidence interval, descriptive statistics, and parametric and nonparametric tests we also discussed. See the recording in YouTube.

In December of 2024, I participated and won 2nd place in the “T.L. Saaty Global Hackathon 2024,” where I presented my problem “What should an autonomous vehicle (AV) do when an ambulance behind it suddenly switches to emergency mode, activating its sirens, while both are stopped at a red light?” In this online event, I have applied my learnings (in my previous role) regarding Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), but now using Python. Our poster was a presentation of the preliminary results of the data coming from the “Mother and Child Determinants of Pediatric Dengue and Development of a Risk Assessment Scoring System for Severe Disease among Filipino Children” Project of the Research and Development Center for Maternal and Child Health (ReDMatCH) Program under the Center for Research and Development, Davao Medical School Foundation Inc. The results primarily highlight both the statistically and biologically significant metabolites that explain dengue severity among children one month to 14 years old. We used urine serum samples and analyzed to Waters Xevo G3 Quadrupole Time-of-Flight (QTOF) Mass Spectrometer, then Waters Acquity Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) I-Class System, then to Progenesis QI software. The resulting data was then subjected to several advanced statistical methods such as Principal Component Analysis, Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis, Fold Change Analysis, ANOVA, and Elastic Net Regression. This is to understand how changes in metabolites influence the severity of dengue, and pinpoint which of these metabolites play a major role in the disease. See more here.
